It might be hard to believe but you can be part of saving the world. A war fought with nuclear weapons could threaten the survival of humans on this planet. It just makes sense to learn about this threat and what action can be taken to prevent it. An appeal from Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations (1997-2007) "My dear young friends, you are already admirably engaged in the struggle for global development, for human rights and to protect the environment. Please bring your energy and imagination to this debate. Help us to seize control of the rogue aircraft on which humanity has embarked, and bring it to a safe landing before it is too late." If governments could eliminate nuclear weapons without our support, Kofi Annan wouldn’t be asking for our help. Now is a good time. There is encouraging news from the White House. U.S. President Obama has called for a world without nuclear weapons. Recent studies of the devastating climate changes predicted after a nuclear war provide us with sound scientific arguments in favour of disarmament. Even some old Cold Warriors have come around and are now saying we must get rid of nuclear weapons. Seriously, Time to Stop is committed to spreading the word about nuclear weapons and finding ways to let governments know what you think about this issue. In addition to our contest for short videos about nuclear weapons, we are collecting photographs and images that express opposition to nuclear weapons such as those above. We are also in the process of organizing some nuclear comedy nights - comedy with a nuclear weapons theme! |
Did you know the peace sign is actually a symbol of nuclear disarmament? The design is based on the semaphore characters for N and D. The peace sign was created in 1958 and became the logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The meaning of the sign has expanded over the years to include not only nuclear disarmament but peace and opposition to tyranny. |

This is one that could be solved with a decision. And the world would be a much safer place. We know the nuclear genie is out of the bottle but there is no need to sit back and let it destroy us. In 1986, US President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev discussed the total elimination of nuclear weapons in this house in Iceland . |

Barbie and the Bomb Did you know the W-42 nuclear warhead was supposed to be carried by a missile designed by Jack Ryan - the same guy who created Barbie, the doll, for Mattel? The U.S. Army never ended up putting a nuclear weapon on the Hawk. They thought about building a nuclear-armed version of Ryan’s other missile, the Sparrow, but changed their minds about that one too. Ryan left the world of weapons in 1957 and, in addition to Barbie, also designed Hot Wheels and Chatty Cathy. |

Don't let anyone tell you that nuclear disarmament is never going to happen. It almost did. In the end, Reagan and Gorbachev were not able to find acceptable terms for a concrete agreement but we came very close to our goal of nuclear disarmament! Let’s get a treaty. One that includes effective verification. Let’s urge our leaders to sign it and move on. There are a lot of other problems in the world that are much harder to solve. |
